The Royal Belum is composed mainly of pristine tropical rainforest, with many river systems, and small grassland areas, some abandoned agricultural plots, and Tasik Temengor, a large man-made lake. The Royal Belum is part of the larger Belum-Temengor forest landscape, one of the largest blocks of forest in Peninsular Malaysia.

The Royal Belum State Park was established in the year 2000. In July 2003, the Belum forest was known as “Royal Belum”. Officially gazette as the Royal Belum State Park on May 3rd 2007. Royal Belum State park has land mass of 117,500 hectares which cover approximately 40% of total Belum Temenggor Forest Reserves (300,000 hectares).

For anglers, it is a fishing heaven for many species of fish like Giant Snakehead and Hampala Barb  are the main target species for lure casting anglers. Other species like Lampam Sungai (Barboides), Kelah (Malaysian Mahseer), Belida (Spotted Featherback), Kalui (Giant Gouramy), Baung (Catfish) and many more are common in Royal Belum.
